Advocacy and community engagement are key to shaping the future of education. Here are ways to stay involved at the county and state levels:
Keep Lees Corner at Chantilly High School!
What is happening?
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is currently conducting a Western County Boundary Review. While our community was labeled as “No Change” for the first 18 month Comprehensive Review, a new Western Boundary Study has been introduced that would potentially rezone Lees Corner Elementary from Chantilly High School to Westfield High School.
Why the Lees Corner PTA Opposes this Move
The Lees Corner PTA is advocating for our families to remain within the Chantilly High School pyramid. We believe this proposal directly contradicts the core pillars of FCPS governance:
1. Violation of FCPS Strategic Plan (Goal 2)
The FCPS Strategic Plan’s Goal 2: Safe, Supported, and Included promises that students will be educated in environments that prioritize their physical safety and sense of belonging.
- Safety Denied: Forcing North-of-50 students to navigate the high-speed Route 50/28 interchange daily—when Chantilly is a 2-mile local trip—is a direct contradiction of the district’s safety commitment.
- Support Severed: This move imposes a “commute tax” on our parent volunteers, making it nearly impossible for families to be the “on-site partners” required for students to feel fully supported and included.
2. Conflict with FCPS Policy 8130
This proposal fails nearly every metric established in Policy 8130 for boundary adjustments:
- Distance (Efficiency): Policy 8130 mandates minimizing transportation distances. This plan triples the commute, forcing students to bypass two closer high schools to reach a third.
- Geographic Contiguity: The policy emphasizes logical neighborhood boundaries. Reaching across the Route 50 barrier to pull Lees Corner is a “leap-frog” maneuver that ignores geographic common sense.
- Stability: Policy 8130 seeks to provide stability for students. Displacing a historic feeder pattern just before the 2027 opening of Skyview HS creates unnecessary disruption.
3. Preservation of Community Infrastructure
Our community is the heart of the Chantilly “feeder” system. Our youth sports programs (CYA) and parent volunteer networks are built specifically around the Chantilly pyramid. This rezoning would dismantle a decade of community-built infrastructure that parents have spent thousands of hours building.
4. Lack of Transparency
Our community was told the boundary study was over. Instead, FCPS launched a separate ‘Western Boundary Review’—a move that was never clearly communicated and lacked any semblance of transparency. By treating this as a new, separate process, the district bypassed established engagement protocols and left Lees Corner families in the dark
Our Goal: The “Scenario 2” Solution
We are asking the School Board to adopt the draft scenario that keeps Lees Corner at Chantilly. We believe the most logical path forward is to utilize internal building capacity at Chantilly and wait for the 2027 opening of Skyview High School to provide the permanent relief this corridor needs.
